Wedding Venue Guide · Water Street Tampa
Wedding flowers at JW Marriott Tampa Water Street.
The largest hotel ballroom in the Tampa Bay area, plus an outdoor lawn six floors up. Flowers at this scale need a plan.
Scale
When the guest list runs into the hundreds.
JW Marriott Tampa Water Street, at 510 Water St, opened in 2020 as the centerpiece of the Water Street district. It has more than 100,000 square feet of event space, and its Tampa Bay Ballroom is the largest hotel ballroom in the area. Couples choose it when the guest list is long, when families are traveling in and need rooms, or when the ceremony, reception and after-party should all happen under one roof.
Flowers at that scale are a different exercise from an 80-guest dinner. The decisions that matter most are about repetition, proportion and logistics, not individual stems.

Spaces
The rooms the hotel lists for weddings
The hotel's published figures for its main spaces:
Catering is in-house. Most weddings use a section of a ballroom rather than the whole thing, so ask the hotel how the room will be divided for your guest count.
- Tampa Bay Ballroom: about 29,100 square feet, seating up to about 2,200 for a banquet. It divides into smaller sections.
- H.B. Plant Ballroom: about 16,025 square feet, about 1,200 for a banquet.
- Ybor Ballroom: about 8,670 square feet, about 600 for a banquet.
- Sixth Floor Event Lawn: an outdoor lawn of about 29,100 square feet, for ceremonies, cocktail hours and receptions.
- Sky View Lobby Bar: a smaller space for about 29 guests.
Design at scale
Repetition is your friend
A 300-guest dinner on rounds of ten means 30 centerpieces. A 500-guest dinner means 50. At that number, the budget goes much further if you pick two or three designs and repeat them, rather than giving every table something different. Repetition also photographs well: a pattern of tall and low pieces across a big room looks intentional from the balcony and in wide shots.
A common layout for a large ballroom:
Tall pieces need a ceiling that can take them. Check the height of the section you'll use, since some divided sections have lower points or chandeliers that affect placement.
- One-third of tables with tall arrangements on stands that lift flowers above eye level.
- Two-thirds with low, lush centerpieces or a trio of bud vases with candles.
- A larger statement at the head table or sweetheart table, the bar and the entrance.
The Sixth Floor Event Lawn
Outdoors, above the street
The lawn gives you an outdoor ceremony with city views without leaving the hotel. It's open to the sun and wind, so:
- Use weighted ceremony pieces and avoid tall, top-heavy designs.
- Choose heat-tolerant stems for anything outdoors more than an hour or two: orchids, anthurium, sturdy garden roses, protea and tropical greenery.
- Place flowers as close to the start time as possible from May to October.
- Agree on the ballroom backup in advance, and plan the ceremony flowers so they can be carried inside.
Logistics
Moving flowers through a large hotel
At a hotel this size, timing and access are everything. Ask your event manager:
For a large wedding, a florist may need a team of several people for two to four hours of setup. Build that time into your timeline.
- Which loading dock vendors use, and the hours it's available.
- Which service elevators reach the ballroom and the sixth floor, and their door sizes, which determines how big a piece can arrive finished.
- When your ballroom section is released. If another event uses it earlier in the day, setup time may be short.
- Whether candles must be enclosed in glass and whether any fire-safety rules apply to installations.
Budgeting
How to think about cost at this size
Because quantity drives the total, the most useful decisions are:
- How many tables need centerpieces, and whether any can share a design.
- Whether ceremony pieces can move to the reception, which saves a second set.
- Where the guests' eyes go: the head table, the entrance and the bar usually deserve the most.
- How much of the room's decor the hotel already provides, such as lighting and linens.
Personal flowers
A large wedding party
Large weddings often have large wedding parties. Ten bridesmaids, ten groomsmen, two sets of parents, grandparents and readers can add up to 30 or more personal flowers before a single centerpiece is counted. Ask your planner for a final list of names and roles about three weeks out, and label each boutonniere and corsage so they reach the right people. Deliver personal flowers to the getting-ready suites in the morning and keep them in water and in air conditioning until the photos start.
Entrances
Where guests form their first impression
At a hotel this large, guests move through a lobby, an escalator or elevator and a pre-function area before they reach the ballroom. That journey is where welcome arrangements, escort-card displays and a statement piece at the ballroom doors earn their place. One generous arrangement at each point where guests pause does more than many small ones scattered along a corridor.
Lighting
How the room changes after dark
Large ballrooms often rely on uplighting, pin spots and colored washes once the lights go down. Ask your lighting vendor what they plan before choosing flower colors, since a blue or purple wash changes how white and blush flowers look. Pin spots on centerpieces make them glow in photos.
Season
Tampa's wedding calendar
The busiest months in Tampa are October to May. In summer, an outdoor ceremony on the lawn should be in the early evening, with the ballroom as the backup. Summer storms are frequent in the afternoons, and the hotel is busy with conventions in some months, so book early if your date falls near a large event.
Multicultural celebrations
Big families, multiple events
The hotel's size makes it a natural fit for weekends with several events: a welcome dinner, a ceremony, a reception and sometimes a mehndi or a brunch. Planning all the flowers together means some pieces can be reused, such as ceremony arrangements moving to the reception or welcome pieces moving to the brunch. Garlands, mandap flowers and petal arrangements should be made close to the event, since they're the most sensitive to heat.

FAQ
JW Marriott Tampa Water Street wedding flower questions.
How big is the ballroom at JW Marriott Tampa Water Street?
The hotel lists the Tampa Bay Ballroom at about 29,100 square feet, seating up to about 2,200 for a banquet, which makes it the largest hotel ballroom in the area. The H.B. Plant Ballroom is about 16,025 square feet, and the Ybor Ballroom about 8,670.
Can we have an outdoor ceremony at JW Marriott Tampa Water Street?
Yes. The hotel's Sixth Floor Event Lawn is used for ceremonies and receptions. Plan weighted, heat-tolerant ceremony flowers and agree a ballroom backup with the hotel.
How many centerpieces does a large hotel wedding need?
